WATER COOLED CABLES CONSTRUCTION
 
Constructive type: GECSA manufacture water cooled cables of any copper cross section, through 10.000 mm2, preferably, rope lay, with only one layer of cable ropes made with 0,5 mm diameter wire. Rope lay type presents the advantages of more flexibility and easier cooling, with a higher overall diameter. This design is the standard GECSA type. If customer request we manufacture the layer type.
WATER COOLED CABLE COMPONENTS
Core: Core is the heart of the cable. It is made by a rubber hose internally reinforced with several layers of nylon fiber. It is fixed to the terminals by means of a system of stainless steel rods. Core provides cables with the necessary mechanical strength.

Terminals:
The ends of core and copper ropes are tin brazed to the connecting terminals. Terminals are machined from high conductivity copper blocks and used for electrical connection by their flat silver coated contact areas, as well as the inlet and outlet taps for cooling water. Terminal dimensions are adapted to customer requirements.

Hose
: I
t is mounted over the set of cables and fixed to the terminals by means of stainless steel clamps. Its aims are conducting the cooling water and provide electrical insulation. Hoses are made by high quality non conductive rubber, internally reinforced with several layers of nylon cloth and are designed to withstand the worse working conditions of torsion, bending, pressure and temperature.

External protection:
Cables should be protected against friction between them and, above all, the effects of heat radiation or eventual projections of smelt metal from the Arc Furnace. With that purpose GECSA, on customer requirement, employs various types of external covers, such as glass fiber, ceramic or NOMEX cloth, or even a second heat protective hose. Bumpers are also employed in many occasions to avoid friction, located at measured distances along the cable.


Copper body:
It is composed by a number from 6 to 12 ropes of cable placed on the core in spiral in one layer. Each rope is formed by several cables made with copper wires 0,5 mm diameter, in quality E-CU. Alternative ropes are covered with a perforated rubber sleeve, in order to avoid direct friction between cables, to extend cable life.
